Learning Outcomes

The Outcomes for this course are broken into two categories: required and elective outcomes. Students must satisfy all required learning outcomes and between 0 to 3 elective outcomes.

Required Outcomes

By the end of this course, students must satisfy all of the following required learning outcomes:

• Technical Skills: Demonstrate proficiency in one or more CS-related technical skills.
• Time Management: Fulfill the required out-of-class time commitment.

These required learning outcomes focus on the technical and time management skills that are important for success in CS, but that are not always explicitly taught in the classroom setting.

For example, many CS classes use git to manage code, but spend little time on how to become proficient with this tool. Many upper-division CS courses also require significantly more than the minimum amount of out-of-class work per credit hour specified by the university, making it crucial to learn time management early.

Elective Outcomes

To earn a C- or higher letter grade, students must also satisfy one or more of the following elective learning outcomes:

• Participation: Participate in the CS community within the classroom.
• Engagement: Engage with the CS community at events outside of the classroom.
• Networking: Connect with and interview members of the CS community outside of the classroom.
• Leadership: Co-organize one or more events for the on-campus CS community.

These elective learning outcomes focus on different ways to engage with the CS community within and outside of the classroom. Collaboration and community engagement are both important for multiple high impact practices (HIPs) that lead to higher levels of learning success.
